Of more than 1,000 variables used as inputs in the initial model, “variable importance analysis” found that opioid use in the year before surgery and the number of opioids prescribed after surgery. There are many assumptions in this study that neither Elliot nor I believe hold water. We also discuss the dangers of big data in making medical decisions.
