The Society for Pediatric Pain Medicine (SPPM) will have its first Global virtual conference “A continuum or Acute and Chronic Pain” tomorrow Saturday November 5, 2022. The program opens with pediatric anesthesiologist and pain researcher Dr. Suellen Walker of University College London, who will discuss the recognition and assessment of neuropathic pain in children. She will be followed by Dr. Allison Fernandez from Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital who will discuss varying techniques of perioperative analgesia in teenagers undergoing anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery of the knee based on data obtained from the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia’s Improvement Network (SPAIN). Next, Dr. Fiona Campbell from Toronto Sickkids Pain Centre will discuss risk factors for the transition from acute to to chronic pain. The final morning speaker, child psychologist Dr. Katie Birnie at the University of Calgary will discuss human-centered health service design to prevent prolonged post-surgical pain. These lectures will be followed by a Q&A
Session II opens with pediatric anesthesiologist and intensivist Dr. Geoff Frawley from the University of Melbourne and Paediatrics Royal Children’s Hospital in Australia, who will highlight the lessons learned from performing awake regional anesthesia in infants and their latest implications. This lecture will be followed by Dr. Carolyn Berryman from the University of Adelaide a physical therapist who will discuss the accuracy, comprehensiveness, and credibility of websites available in Australia relating to CRPS treatment. Transitioning to chronic pain, Dr. Ross Drake of Starship Children’s Health in Auckland, New Zealand, will outline the evolution of the role of palliative care and how it complements chronic pain management in children. Session II will conclude with Dr. Forbes McGain who will discuss the environmental footprint between general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, and combined anesthesia for knee surgery.
