From Jeff Feldman, MD, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
I wanted to inform the readers of the Pediatric Anesthesia Article of the Day of a new initiative that we are proud to launch in Ron Litman’s memory. Ron’s family and the Department of Anesthesiology at CHOP have created the Ronald S. Litman, D.O. Endowed Mentorship Award to be conveyed annually to a faculty member in the department to support a mentored project. The award will consist of $25,000 to support the mentee and project costs and will be funded in perpetuity.
Thanks to the generosity of Ron’s family, we are well on our way to funding the award. The Department of Anesthesiology has committed to matching additional donations. If you are interested in learning more about the award program or are interested in donating, additional details can be found by clicking the following hyperlink: Ronald S. Litman, D.O. Endowed Mentorship Award. We would be very grateful for your support.
If you have additional questions or comments, feel free to contact Jeff Feldman at feldmanj@chop.edu or Jennifer Mathews-Daniel in the CHOP Development Office at MATHEWSDAJ@chop.edu.
From Peggy McNaul, MD, Chair Dep’t of Anesthesiology, University of Virginia
In reading last week’s PAAD (Work related quality of life), Rebecca Margolis wrote: “Yet, we don’t rigorously screen for personality traits or emotional intelligence in the medical school application process. Why are we still using the traditional yardstick of MCATs and GPAs when we know that highly empathetic, emotionally intelligent people will make the best physicians and better yet, future leaders in medicine”?
I thought I would share that the AAMC seems to be trying to address what today’s article calls to question. A situational awareness test has been developed to assess potential students readiness to learn about issues related to professionalism. The first year of testing is ongoing now.
