Randall P. Flick, MD, MPH is the recipient of the 2025 Society for Pediatric Anesthesia's Myron Yaster MD lifetime achievement award
Randall (“Randy”) Flick, MD, MPH recently competed nearly 10 years as Director of the Mayo Clinic Children’s Center. In that role he oversaw all pediatric activity across the Mayo Clinic Enterprise reporting directly to the Mayo Clinic Dean for Practice and to the CEO. He holds the academic rank of Professor of Anesthesiology and Pediatrics.
Dr. Flick received the R.N. diploma from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing and the B.A. degree in biology from Moorhead State University. He earned the M.D. degree from the University of North Dakota School of Medicine (AOA) and the M.P.H. degree from The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Flick completed an internship and residency in pediatrics at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Washington University; a residency in anesthesiology at Barnes Hospital-Washington U.; and a fellowship in advanced specialty training in pediatric anesthesiology and intensive care at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He joined the staff of Mayo Clinic in 1995. He holds board certification in four specialities including pediatrics and pediatric critical care (ABP) as well as anesthesiology and pediatric anesthesiology (ABA).
Dr. Flick is a past president the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia Board of Directors and previously chaired the ASA Committee on Pediatric Anesthesiology. For the United States Food and Drug Administration, Dr. Flick has served as Chair of the Advisory Committee on Anesthetic and Analgesic Drug Products (AADPAC) and as a member of the Pediatric Advisory Committee (PAC) reporting directly to the FDA commissioner. Dr. Flick currently serves as a member of the National Institutes of Child Health and Development Pediatrics Study Section and as a site reviewer for the American College of Surgeons Childrens Surgery Verification Program. In the community, he has served as president of the local Ronald McDonald House Board, is a Global Medical Advisor to Americares International, a current trustee of the Minnesota Zoo and a past board member of the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia, Women’s Empowerment and Leadership Initiative (WELI).
Recognized as an international expert in his field, Dr. Flick has presented at numerous local, regional, national, and international meetings. He is a prolific publisher, with over 100 peer- reviewed articles, abstracts, and book chapters to his credit. Dr. Flick’s research interests include outcomes in pediatric anesthesia, neurodevelopment effect of anesthetic exposure, and quality in pediatric hospital care. He is Co-PI on a federally funded study of the effects of anesthetic exposure on the developing brain (R01 HD071907-04, MASK Study) and co-investigator on a follow-up study (R01 HD099147-01A1) Neuroimaging Studies in Pediatric Anesthesia Neurotoxicity.
Dr. Flick and his wife Loree have three sons Bryant (Rochester, Minnesota), Garrett (Orlando, Florida), Grant (Minneapolis), grandsons (Owen and Albert), and granddaughter (Mara)
